Career Day - Dorothy Shain, Greenville, SC Artist
I'm super excited about this month's career day feature: the super talented, Dorothy Shain! She's kind of a big deal in my book and I absolutely LOVE her work! Think vibrant colors, bikinis, and travel-inspired paintings...what more could you want? I'm starting to save my pennies for a big ole painting from her one of these days!
This girl is one of the kindest people and was so welcoming to me when I asked if I could come photograph her and her studio last month. Today, she's sharing about what inspires her work and some business advice - it's definitely worth the quick read.
Tell us what you do in 2 sentences or less?
I connect with creative people & places and create work that translates how I feel about the experiences and adventures I have had to others.
What are you looking forward to most this year? Any big goals or projects that get you excited?
There are a few projects coming up that I can't share just yet, but I am so thrilled for what's in store. I'm really excited to see my feature in Garden and Gun's Southern Women issue and am so honored to be included in such an accomplished group of women. I am most looking forward to traveling later this year and getting inspired. My art is a reflection of my love for travel, so I'm excited to see my body of work grow from these new experiences.
What’s your go-to when you need creative inspiration?
I love reading a book that inspires me to try something new or to spend time outside with my dogs- that's the best break when you feel like you're trapped inside your workspace.
What’s the biggest overall lesson you’ve learned in running a business?
Get all the details of a project before moving forward with it, and be sure to be intentional with the relationships you dive into professionally.
Any advice for women trying to figure out how to translate passion into a career like you’ve done?
It's hard work - so be your own best advocate! But always remember to stay connected to what made you love your passion project in the first place.
What’s a personal motto or quote that describes how you view your work and/or business?
Always go where the good energy and adventure is...and listen to your gut!
Anyone that inspires you or that you look up to in Greenville?
Kay Roper - she just raised seven million dollars for the Cancer Survivors Park in Downtown Greenville. This is a cause that is very close to my heart, as cancer has affected my family. It has been amazing working with her to design a scarf for CSP and watching her change lives, support families and individuals touched by cancer, and provide education!
Check out Dorothy's scarves here - 100% of the proceeds go to the park!
