Tell us what you do in a few sentences or less.
I am primarily a wedding calligrapher, but I also love opportunities to design other elements of my clients’ wedding paper including entire invitation suites, maps, and custom monograms.
What is your favorite part of what you do?
My favorite part is that I get to be creative and cultivate beauty in my work. I love taking a blank envelope and some ink and using letters and flourishing to make each one uniquely beautiful. Wedding paper is often a wedding guest’s first impression of the event to come and it really does “set the tone” of the wedding. I love helping brides think through this and seeing how I can best help them represent their wedding day through paper in a beautiful and meaningful way.
What are you looking forward to most this year? Any big goals or projects that get you excited?
I have been working on my website since the fall and am excited to get that launched soon! I’m also looking forward to several fun design jobs this spring.
What’s the biggest overall lesson you’ve learned in starting and running a business?
I’ve learned there are so many things I do not know how to do or how BEST to do. Be confident in what you know, but also stay humble about what you don’t! Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Talk to other creatives and small business owners and see how they operate. I still have so much yet to learn :)
Any advice for women interested in what you do?
Never stop trying to improve your craft by studying the calligraphy of those more advanced. I have spent countless hours trying to imitate the way one calligrapher does their flourishing or another does their majuscules (uppercase letters). Thankfully there are many helpful online resources!
What’s a personal motto or quote that describes how you view your work and/or business?
It is always my desire that my calligraphy conveys a personal touch and enhances a paper suite to make it meaningful and timeless.
Anyone that inspires you or that you look up to in Greenville or beyond?
There are so many talented creatives in Greenville that I love keeping up with, though I would have to say Holly Hollon, a calligrapher/illustrator/stationer out of Birmingham, Alabama (my hometown!), is someone whose work I have greatly admired from the beginning and am continuously inspired by.
