Career Day - Michal of CakeSmith, Greenville SC Cake Baker

Michal is the mastermind behind the confection perfection that is CakeSmith and she's beyond talented! I got to spend an afternoon with her, watching her create several unique small batch cakes and hearing all about her business and journey to where she is today (see below). I left feeling super inspired and on a sugar high (literally) from the delicious s'mores cake that she sent home with me. It was so flavorful but really light and airy too with toasted merengue on top that was the perfect pair with the chocolatey cake. I can't even accurately describe how amazing it was so you'll just have to try one for yourself!

What’s your favorite part of your job?

The "job" never gets boring because I can be creative and each day brings on different challenge. I also thrive on the challenges and rewards of owning my own business although it's definitely not a walk in the park.

What are you looking forward to most this year? Any big goals or projects that get you excited?

I have a lot of fun cakes and more creative cakes this season, my brides seam to be less traditional this summer.

What’s your go-to when you need creative inspiration?

Design inspiration can range from current trends in textiles, art, colors, textures etc... it's like taking art (and floral design inspiration etc) and creating something edible that can coordinate with that trend or "look."

What’s the biggest overall lesson you’ve learned in running a business?

You have to love what you do to succeed as an entrepreneur... also, understanding what captures your audience or client is key in long term success.. I have to constantly evolve and grow to make it.

Any advice for women interested in what you do?

Phew...I'm no expert but I think some people are too hesitant to make that first step. Just be confident in your ability and start baking or creating (whatever business it is) and putting yourself out there. Exposure is key!

What thing or ritual could you not live without in your day-to-day?

I get into a zone when baking, some may say too serious but I have to to concentrate in order to juggle several things at once, especially on weekends where I have several events simultaneously. I do have a tool that I absolutely cannot live without and I even travel with it - a 6 inch off-set spatula!

Anyone that inspires you or that you look up to in Greenville?

I Would have to say Carl Sobesinski, owner of Table 301 restaurant group. I worked for him for about 5 years. He isn't scared of failure and is willing to take risks.

ooo, none, it all depends on my mood...
