Career Day - Amy of Urban Digs, Greenville, SC Gift and Garden Shop

August 9, 2017

If you live in Greenville, then you hopefully know about Amy's shop, Urban Digs. It's a treasure trove of art, home goods, pretty plants, gifts, and the cutest kid's clothing and toys. Amy has curated her shop in a way that is homey and inviting but not a bit intimidating. Her candles are my absolute favorite and this place is my go-to for a last minute gift. She runs her shop with her pup by her side and you can count on both of them warmly greeting you as you walk through the door. That's enough of a reason for me to make a special trip to that side of town! I've loved hearing how different women in Greenville run their businesses and Amy is no exception! She's worked so hard and I hope y'all enjoy hearing her story and her advice as much as I did.

What’s your favorite part of your job?

As cliche as it may sound, my customers! I am beyond blessed to count some of the smartest, most artistic, funniest people as my regular customers. Everyday is different depending on who walks through the door! I love that and I love feeling like my store is part of a community.

What are you looking forward to most this year? Any big goals or projects that get you excited? We've been working on a website for the store. Also, I'm looking for some new and interesting artists to add to the mix.

What inspired you to open your shop?

I've worked in retail for over 25 years, but it was the birth of my twins (Ben & Zoe) that inspired me to go for it. They had a very traumatic birth and my son was in occupational and physical therapy for the first three years of his life. Their incredible strength made me stronger. When they were cleared of any medical issues, I quit my job and started the process of acquiring a small business loan.

What was the best piece of business advice were you given when you were starting out?

"This store is you. It's your personality. You have to put the work in." - my dad

And I did, I worked 6 days a week for the first 3 years without a vacation or sick day.

What’s a personal motto or quote that describes how you view your work and/or business?

Trust your instincts.

What do you like to do when you’re not at Urban Digs?

I'm an addict to all things vintage!  I love to poke around estate sales, flea markets, and thrift stores!

Quick Q’s:

The front! Big windows, lots of plants!

Daily uniform?

Biggest influence in biz work? My Dad

Last book you read?
